Honoring Our Mamas Beyond Motherhood

Before anything else, our dogs are not just part of our program, they are part of our lives.

One of the questions we’re often asked is why we choose to place some of our mama dogs into carefully selected homes after they’ve completed their time in our breeding program. The answer is simple, but deeply important to us. While our mamas are incredibly loved here, we also recognize that life in a busy, active breeding home is very different from life as someone’s one-on-one companion. As our program grows and evolves, we have to be intentional about how many dogs we keep in our home so that each one continues to receive the level of attention, structure, and care they deserve. Retiring a mama is never about letting her go. It’s about giving her more through the beauty of adoption. It’s about creating space for her to be someone’s whole world instead of sharing that role and ensuring that her next chapter is filled with the kind of individual attention, rest, and companionship that every dog deserves after giving so much. This is one of the hardest, and most meaningful, decisions we make.

Our Process

Retirement isn’t a fixed timeline. It’s something each of our girls tells us in her own way. Sometimes it’s in how she recovers after a litter. Sometimes it’s in her energy shifting, or her desire for more quiet, more closeness, or more individual attention. And sometimes it’s simply us recognizing that she has given enough. We pay close attention to those signals, alongside her health, age, and overall well-being, and we make the decision before she needs it, not after. Our goal is always to retire our mamas while they are still young and thriving, so they can step into their next chapter feeling their best, with a full life ahead of them.

Requirements: Our goal is to ensure that every dog continues to receive thoughtful, consistent care throughout their life. Because of that, we require that their forever families maintain pet insurance and take full responsibility for all veterinary care, including the cost of spay/neuter and any related expenses. We remain a lifelong safety net and will always take a dog back for any reason; however, once placed, all expenses are the responsibility of the adopting family and are not reimbursed. AKC registration paperwork is not provided, and ownership will be transferred into the adopting family’s name once proof of spay/neuter has been completed.

Our Success Stories

Over the years, we have had the pleasure of placing some of our retired mamas or a few dogs that never made it to that point due to OFA results or potential health concerns in loving homes.

Sunny's Story

Sunny’s journey reminded us just how important it is to make thoughtful decisions early. Due to complications that made breeding not the right path for her after only two litters, we chose to place her with her Guardian home rather than ask her to meet expectations that didn’t align with her individual needs. That decision gave Sunny the opportunity to move directly into a home where she could simply be loved, without any added pressure. She is now thriving in a home where her playful and affectionate personality is fully embraced. Her family often shares how seamlessly she fit into their lives, and how quickly she became an irreplaceable part of their family.

Misty's Story

Misty is the kind of girl who gives everything she has. After a more difficult recovery that was difficult on her GI system, it became clear that the best decision for her was to step away from the demands of breeding and transition into a home where her focus could shift entirely to her own well-being and happiness. Today, Misty is doing beautifully. She’s in a home where she is nurtured, doted on, and given the space to just be herself. Her family shares how sweet and connected she is, and how much joy she brings into their everyday life. Watching her thrive in this environment has been the best possible outcome.

Rooster's Story

Rooster is another example of the kind of decisions that often go unseen, but matter deeply. When he did not meet the criteria to move forward in our program as a future stud based on his OFA results, we made the choice to place him rather than compromise on the standards we hold for future generations. That decision gave Rooster something even better, a home where his personality could take center stage. He is now in a home that celebrates his fun, engaging nature every single day. His family often laughs about how much character he brings into their lives, and how quickly he became part of their routine. He didn’t lose anything by not entering the program, he gained exactly the life he was meant to have.

Fiera's Story

Fiera’s story is one I will always carry with me. When she retired from our program, she stayed right here at home with us. She had given so much, and it was incredibly important to me that she got to simply live, rest, and be loved without expectation in the place she had always known. In her retirement, she did exactly that. She was surrounded by familiarity, comfort, and the people who knew her best. We gave her as much life, joy, and presence as we possibly could. Recently, we were faced with unexpected health concerns that began to impact her quality of life. After thoughtful consideration and guidance, we made the incredibly difficult decision to let her go peacefully, choosing comfort over prolonging what would have become unfair to her. This was completely unrelated to her role in our program and, unfortunately, reflects the reality of the most common health challenge seen in Golden Retrievers as a breed. On a personal level, this loss is still very fresh, and I am truly heartbroken. Fiera was not just part of our program, she was part of our family. For the families who have one of her puppies, I want to gently reassure you that this was not something predictable or preventable, and it does not change the care, intention, or health focus behind the dogs we raise. If anything, it reinforces why we remain so committed to doing everything thoughtfully and responsibly. Fiera’s legacy lives on not just in her puppies, but in the love, temperament, and presence she passed down so naturally. She was deeply loved, and she always will be.

Sage

Sage is the kind of dog who forms deep, meaningful bonds with her people. She’s not a dog who gives herself away to everyone right away, but once you’re hers, you are truly hers. That loyalty, connection, and quiet devotion are what make her so incredibly special. At around 50-55 pounds, Sage has a beautiful, balanced build with a rich medium-dark red coat that changes with the seasons, sleek and lighter in the summer, and fuller with soft feathering in the cooler months. She carries herself with a natural confidence and calm awareness of her surroundings. She has a wonderful balance of energy and ease. Sage enjoys being active and engaged, whether that’s going for walks or being included in daily life, but she also settles beautifully and knows how to relax when it’s time to be home. She’s not chaotic or demanding, she’s thoughtful, steady, and in tune with her environment. Sage thrives in a home where she can build a strong bond and feel secure in her place. She does best with people who appreciate that kind of deeper connection and are willing to give her the time and consistency to fully settle in and attach. As she approaches retirement after her final litter this summer, we are beginning the process of finding the right home for her next chapter. This will be a very intentional placement focused on the right fit for her personality and needs. Sage has given so much to our program, and it’s incredibly important to us that her next home reflects that. She deserves a family who will understand her, respect her nature, and give her the kind of steady, connected life where she can truly thrive. If you feel like you might be the right fit for Sage, I would love to hear more about you.

Wish

Wish is the kind of dog who leaves a lasting mark on everyone lucky enough to know her. She carries a joyful, magnetic presence with a natural balance of playfulness and connection, bringing a sense of lightness into everyday life while still forming deep, meaningful bonds with her people. Wish thrives when she is included, whether that’s in daily routines or shared moments at home, and she has an effortless way of making herself part of the rhythm of a family. While she is not expected to retire until 2027, we believe in being intentional well in advance when it comes to our girls, and are beginning to quietly identify the right home for her future. This will be a highly selective placement focused on long-term alignment, not timing or availability. Wish has been a foundational part of our program, and it is incredibly important to us that her next chapter reflects everything she has given. She deserves a home where she will be deeply loved, included, and cherished as someone’s everything. If you feel like you may be the right fit for Wish when that time comes, we would love to hear more about you.
